The Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes

I Spent almost two weeks in Rhodes and with this much time on my hands I decided to do a little more than lounge at the beach. One day I rented a car with my family and we decided to do some sightseeing. One of the first things I see when I search places to visit in Rhodes was the butterfly valley but I discovered something along the way there.

On the drive to the butterfly valley I saw a sign that said Old Olive Oil Factory and we stopped out of curiosity and it was one of the best decisions we made that day.

When arriving we met the owner of the factors who gave us a testing of different olive oils and honey’s. we loved some so much that we ended up buying some bottles! The Olive Oils you buy here cannot be found in a normal supermarket or anywhere else and let me tell you, they are so worth it!

Not only did they sell olive oil and honey but they also sold soaps and all sorts of hand made products which I hadn’t seen anywhere else on the island. If you drive buy it is worth a stop!

After the small pit stop we made it to the butterfly valley. The best parking is the parking 3 which is at the bottom of the valley and is the shortest walk to the actual entrance.

From the bottom of the valley it takes around 35 minutes to walk up and 20 minutes to walk down. You can have the option of taking a small train from the entrance all the way up and then you only need to walk down viewing everything one way instead of while going up then down again.

We decided to walk especially as you are sheltered from the sun by the trees.

As you walk along the valley on wooden paths and bridges you see a different kind of vegetation from what you see on the rest of the island.

There are trees and streams with waterfalls along the way and the temperature is cooler making the walk pleasant.

You may imagine the butterfly’s flying around but they are actually camouflaged against their environment and not the easiest to spot.

Make sure to look at tree trunks and leaves to spot them as there is only one type that resides here.

Apart from Butterflies you will also see crabs in the waterfalls.

It is a nice place to visit however I find it worth it if you go in combination with other destinations such as the acropolis of Rhodes and Lindos.
