Day Two in Berlin

While we talk about the many layers of Berlin’s history and character, we cannot deny the remarkable contribution the city’s development has made to ‘brutalist’ architecture.  In fact, Alexanderplatz square almost serves as a monument to this design movement with the TV Tower (Fernsehturm), with its height of more than 300m, as the crowning glory. The construction of the tower was finished in 1969 to demonstrate the superiority of the administration of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and makes a great sightseeing stop. The tower provides the best views of the city and a tour hold fascinating architectural and cultural insight.  A different way to experience the tower is by having dinner in the revolving restaurant to really appreciate the period’s style and décor.  The menu is uncomplicated and provides an opportunity to sample some typical Berlin dishes.

Very close to the TV Tower is a gorgeous refurbished townhouse hotel called Lux 11. It is a beautifully designed and minimalistic luxury boutique property with its historic setting. Glamour and comfort offer a unique experience as soon as you enter.  This hotel is focused on entertainment as much a hospitality and, again, reflects the progressive and creative personality of Berlin.

In terms of creative style and fashion, Hackescher Markt is a place to immerse oneself in original fashion trends, unique art & design, and independent cafes & restaurant.  This serves as a meeting point for tourists and Berliners alike. In the many winding streets you can find top brand shops and small boutiques of international designers. The attraction of this place is the Hackesche Hofe building, with eight interconnected courtyards where you will find bars, theatres, cinemas, places to have a drink, more art galleries and shops.

Being a fan of this part of town for its urban life, I find myself drawn to the Hotel Amano. The chic modern design boutique hotel is a relaxed place to be where you will have guaranteed fun, and find the new sole of Berlin.
