What could we do if we have an abandoned fortress in the sea and no longer serves as an artillery piece to defend your territory? The answer lies in “The Spitbank Fort Hotel”, whose role has shifted from military to luxury hotel. This fort, the first luxury island in England, was created in 1859 to defend the maritime city of Portsmouth from a possible French invasion in the time of Napoleon III as a result of the Royal Commission. The Spitbank is not alone. “The Strong Horse Sand Fort” and “The No Man’s Land Fort” also exist and were developed to create a united protection, and stayed in service until after the First World War.
Spitbank Fort HotelIn 1982, the British government sold the Fort Spitabank and it was transformed to a privately owned museum. Years later, an expensive and creative redevelopment took place, becoming a distinctive luxury hotel with fine finishes and good taste, but without losing many of its distinctive and original elements of its past. The old fortress is only accessible by boat, providing maximum customer privacy, exclusivity and a wonderful view to the Isle of Wight. Currently, it has capacity only for 18 guests because of its unique and stunning 9 bedroom suites, but at the time, it could accommodate up to 150 soldiers. Each bedroom is luxuriously equipped with the latest technology and has also spectacular common areas like the departure lounge, the hot pool & sauna, the terrace and its magnificent bar; all of them with spectacular sea views, perfect for enjoying yourself in a peaceful environment.
If you book in advance, you can enjoy the fine wines through the Spitbank Wine tasting experience or if you prefer you can enjoy a spa treatment by your own personal therapist.
Interestingly, this Victorian fortress is not only available as a hotel. Filming and corporate rentals are also held along with private hire for events. “The Crow’s Nest” event room – probably with the best views of the Fort – can offer you an exclusive event experience and can also be transformed into an additional bedroom. “The Officer’s Mess” is a stunning dining room restaurant and “The Laurent-Perrier” can offer you a cold glass of champagne. No doubt that this is an adventure and a unique experience that is worth living.
