Modernism meets heaven in Luxembourg

Visitors to Luxembourg are never short of things to see and do in this charming and historic city. From the bastions and fortresses that speak of less peaceful times in the past through to the international institutions that reflect the position of this small city and country in the heart of modern Europe, the points of interest are numerous. For those who want to enjoy the high arts there is plenty to experience too, not least at the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

The orchestra is located on Place De Europe in the heart of the capital, making it easy to reach from all the city centre hotels. Visitors can, of course, book tickets to a concert at any time, with these being arranged in seasons so that people can plan ahead for the one that coincides with their own visit to the city. As well as the senior orchestra, there are visiting appearances by travelling orchestras and a youth orchestra, ensuring there is always plenty to choose from both in terms of the music on offer and also who is performing it. The acoustics are truly heavenly, with this fine modern building being designed to reflect the sound superbly. Christian de Portzamparc’s design of the building set to create some utterly compelling sounds, and anyone attending a concert will be in agreement that he succeeded. Going to a concert is not the only way to enjoy the venue. Guided tours are available for between six and 45 people.

These are held as standard on Saturday mornings, but they can be arranged at other times of the week on request, so if Saturday’s are not convenient, it is a great idea to contact the Philharmonie ahead of time to see what else can be arranged. The modernist architecture is certainly grand and incredibly spacious. The building is 126 m long and 109 m wide from the outside, with a roof height of 25 m. The building contains 193,000 m3 of space, of which over 44,000 m3 is in the foyer alone. Impressive in its architecture, spellbinding in its acoustics and presenting a delightful array of music, this is one Luxembourg venue visitors just have to see.
